, hamburger meat is deliberately treated with Ammonia, more commonly used in window cleaner, as a processing agent to kill Salmonella and E.Coli. The process apparently makes the hamburger meat "safe". It seems there is no need to worry about the fact that people are eating window cleaner in their burgers.
Eight years ago a US beef company trying to expand into the hamburger industry came up with a product made from fatty trimmings normally discarded into slaughterhouse bins. These trimmings are highly susceptible to contamination but when treated with Ammonia the E.Coli is reduced to "an undetectable level".

An investigation by Choice into cakes purchased from supermarketers has discovered many contain in excess of 25 additives and some of the most expensive brands are among the worst offenders.
Choice tested nearly 100 cakes.The worst offenders were Woolworths Bakehouse Sponge Iced and Fresh-Filled Cream cake which had 27 additives. Top Taste Rollettes Choc and Woolworths Bakehouse Sponge Single Birthday Fresh Cream each had 26 additives each.

Robert Lustig, a Pediatrician at the Children's Hospital of the University of California in San Francisco, said: "Childhood obesity has become epidemic over the past 30 years... We are in the midst of an unprecedented rise in prevalence and severity of obesity, especially in children... Our current western food environment has become highly insulinogenic, as demonstrated by its increased energy density, high-fat content, high glycemic index, increased fructose composition, decreased fiber, and decreased dairy content."

Phthalates have long been used to make plastic soft and flexible. But the chemicals can leach out of plastic products and enter our bodies, where some scientists suspect they act like hormones. Phthalates have been shown to affect the development of the male reproductive system in lab animals, and a few small studies suggest they may be linked to subtle effects in the reproductive organs of infant boys.

Coca-Cola will have to publish corrective advertising after the competition watchdog found the company made "totally unacceptable" claims that its drink did not rot teeth or lead to weight gain.
The full-page ad featured actress Kerry Armstrong extolling the virtues of Coca-Cola and caused an outcry from parents and health groups when it was published in newspapers late last year.
This protest led to complaints to the industry-run Advertising Standards Bureau. The Bureau ruled in November that the advertisement was "truthful and honest" - a decision called a failure by a parents' group.
Today the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took a very different view.

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. Yeast extract starts from dead yeast. It is found in copius quantites at the bottom of wine and beer brewery vats. This dead yeast goes through a refinement process where it is soaked in a high Sodium Chloride (Salt) solution and often treated with hydrochloric acid to "hydrolyze" the proteins.
