Ammonia deliberately added to hamburger meat

Thursday, 21 January 2010 14:27

According to a recent article by the New York Timesarticle by the New York Times, hamburger meat is deliberately treated with Ammonia, more commonly used in window cleaner, as a processing agent to kill Salmonella and E.Coli. The process apparently makes the hamburger meat "safe". It seems there is no need to worry about the fact that people are eating window cleaner in their burgers.

Eight years ago a US beef company trying to expand into the hamburger industry came up with a product made from fatty trimmings normally discarded into slaughterhouse bins. These trimmings are highly susceptible to contamination but when treated with Ammonia the E.Coli is reduced to "an undetectable level".

Manufacturing processes add sugar and additives and remove fibre causing hormone imbalance which increases appetite and decreases activity.
In a study published in the journal Nature Clinical Practice Endocrinology and Metabolism, scientists have attributed hormonal imbalances caused by high calorie, high fat western diet to be responsible for obesity.

Robert Lustig, a Pediatrician at the Children's Hospital of the University of California in San Francisco, said: "Childhood obesity has become epidemic over the past 30 years... We are in the midst of an unprecedented rise in prevalence and severity of obesity, especially in children... Our current western food environment has become highly insulinogenic, as demonstrated by its increased energy density, high-fat content, high glycemic index, increased fructose composition, decreased fiber, and decreased dairy content."

US bans chemical phthalate additives from children's toys. But critics are skeptical.

Phthalates have been banned because they can affect the development of the reproductive system in infants. But are the substitutes any safer?
A new federal law banning phthalates in children's toys and other kids' products has come into force in the US. But critics are skeptical of the efficacy of the law as companies currently aren't required to publicly disclose the chemicals they use in place of phthalates - and little is known about the health effects of one of the most widely used alternatives.

Phthalates have long been used to make plastic soft and flexible. But the chemicals can leach out of plastic products and enter our bodies, where some scientists suspect they act like hormones. Phthalates have been shown to affect the development of the male reproductive system in lab animals, and a few small studies suggest they may be linked to subtle effects in the reproductive organs of infant boys.

Coca-Cola ordered to apologise for misleading advertisements

The misleading "Myth Buster" ad which has landed Coke in hot water.
THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has found Coca-Cola was misleading in a "myth busting" ad featuring actress Kerry Armstrong.

Coca-Cola will have to publish corrective advertising after the competition watchdog found the company made "totally unacceptable" claims that its drink did not rot teeth or lead to weight gain.

The full-page ad featured actress Kerry Armstrong extolling the virtues of Coca-Cola and caused an outcry from parents and health groups when it was published in newspapers late last year.

This protest led to complaints to the industry-run Advertising Standards Bureau. The Bureau ruled in November that the advertisement was "truthful and honest" - a decision called a failure by a parents' group.

Today the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took a very different view.

The dangers of Aspartame! Must read!

Artificial sweeteners using Aspartame
Touted as a healthy alternative to sugar, aspartame is a dangerous additive and should be avoided.
Apartame is an artificial sweetener which goes by the name of  Equal, Nutrasweet and several other brands. Aspartame produces Aspartate during digestion. It was approved for use in the US as a food additive in 1981 and was the most contested decision in the  FDA's history. And rightly so, it's is a dangerous poison and should be avoided.

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as 'excitotoxins'. They 'excite' or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Experts warn barbecuing red meat produces the most carcinogens.
The tradition of a steak on the barbecue is in the gun, after a major dietary study found people who eat red meat are more likely to die from cancer or heart attack.

Barbecuing red meat was also the cooking method that caused the most cancer causing "carcinogens", experts have warned.

The US study looked at the diets of more than 500,000 people and a follow-up 10 years later found those who ate the most red, or processed, meat had a higher incidence of death.

Yeast extract = Monosodium glutamate!

Sunday, 22 March 2009 13:43

vegemite
It's incredibly popular. But would you buy it if it's main ingredient was labelled at MSG?
Yeast extract is a very common product found in Vegemite, Marmite, Promite, Oxo, gravy, stock cubes and many other products. In fact, it is often the primary ingredient used in these products. But what is yeast extract? What is extracted from the yeast? How is it extracted? Contrary to what most food manufacturers will tell you, it is not a "natural" product?

Yeast extract starts from dead yeast. It is found in copius quantites at the bottom of wine and beer brewery vats. This dead yeast goes through a refinement process where it is soaked in a high Sodium Chloride (Salt) solution and often treated with hydrochloric acid to "hydrolyze" the proteins.
